All those with the necessary academic background will be able to enroll in the diploma program and subsequently find work in both private and public sectors. The following are the key objectives of the diploma:

  1. Equip successful graduates with sufficient knowledge, skills and expertise required to work with and to support of children with ASD.
  2. Enable successful graduates to plan, organize and evaluate educational and behavioral management plans for children with ASD.

Introduction

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a group of disorders characterized by difficulties with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as distinct strengths and distinctions. There isn’t just one variety of autism; there are several, each caused by a unique combination of genetic and environmental factors. The term “spectrum” refers to the vast range of challenges and capabilities that each individual with autism possesses. The most visible indicators of autism usually show between the ages of 2 and 3. It can be diagnosed as early as 18 months in some cases. Some autism-related developmental deficits can be detected and addressed even sooner.

In Pakistan, the current prevalence of autism spectrum disorder is unknown. The ratio is constantly increasing year after year, and there is a skilled professional scarcity in the field. To address the demands of students in this profession, a considerable number of qualified Autism therapists are needed in both public and private institutions.

Autistic children and adults may benefit from individual or group attention therapies from autism specialists. The Diploma in Autism will assist parents, caregivers, and professionals in early intervention, education, and therapy for children with autism that may result in considerable progress. Professionals can work in a variety of settings (schools, homes, and hospitals), giving them the opportunity to help young children and their families. Parents and caregivers will have a better understanding of their children and will be able to influence positive behaviour changes in them. Professionals will be better able to collaborate with a multidisciplinary group.

Clinical Practice

After the successful completion of the course work, there shall be a Clinical Practice for 3 months. The successful completion of Clinical Practice is a compulsory requirement for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Evaluation of this course will be based on the Case study and portfolio; jointly assessed by the faculty and the cooperating supervisor.
